Shit I Want In My House |
By Alexandra Donohoe Church
I’m in the process of designing my own home – which many designers will know, is both an intuitive and challenging journey. Working in design, we are flooded with all sorts of visual stimuli. And while this is inspirational at best, often the ubiquity of images is downright overwhelming. Being both the client and designer, I’ve embraced the ‘freedom of expression’ by returning to pieces that have simply ‘stayed with me’ over the years – pieces that are carefully crafted, that I truly never tire of.
A few sculptures and artistic elements are at the top of my list, including a voluminous hand-built vessel by Kazunori Hamana, overlaid with dynamic patterns derived from nature, and a complementary ceramic by UK-based Clementine Keith Roach, carefully adorned with the graceful hands of women. Sculptural works in foraged timber, by Australian artist Olive Gill-Hille sit alongside an expressive cardboard relief by Florian Baudrexel, each a contemplation of materiality and form.
My interest in mid-century Brazilian design inspired the selection of the Martin Eisler and Carlo Hauner Buffet and Chair, reflecting the ‘new Brazilia’ aesthetic; rudimentary yet agile. Another favourite is Borghesani’s robot-inspired bar; refined, fun and full of booze. The list of curiosities goes on, each eliciting an emotive response that belies trends and aesthetics. I hope you enjoy exploring.
